How do you get your CV noticed?
It is important to remember that
the person reviewing your CV is
probably overworked, underpaid
and looking for that special someone
who will make his job easier. They
are not going to want to read reams
of irrelevant information about
the Classical History course you
took in first year, or the minute
detail regarding your responsibilities
while selling ice creams at Brighton
during your last holiday. But,
they might be interested in the
conflict handling skills you learned
on the job at Brighton.
The trick is to take your studies
and work experience to date, and
to extract those details that are
relevant to an actuarial employer.
These need to be woven into your
CV in an intelligent manner to
produce a document that not only
gives the honest facts, but something
of your personality too. And all
of this in just 1 or 2
pages!
Do not just bring your CV out of
the mothballs, dust if off and
add on your latest job description
each time you need it. Your CV
should get shorter, not longer
every time you use it. At each
new job search, you need to revise
the whole document, removing that
which is no longer relevant and
highlighting that which has become
more important to your career.
