Advice for new actuarial students
Your first few actuarial positions
will shape the course of a rewarding
career. Perhaps you are newly
graduated, and are about to take
your first steps into the working
world. Or perhaps you already
have a year or two's experience
but are looking for a new challenge.
You may even have worked in another
field for some time, but feel
that an actuarial career would
be more satisfying. Read on for
tips and advice on how to get
started.
Firstly you need to know that most
entry level and junior positions
are not offered to recruitment
agents, but are filled
directly by the companies themselves. This
knowledge can save you many fruitless
hours spent applying to the various
recruitment agents, and waiting
for their standard and unhelpful "...thank
you for your recent enquiry. We
regret that we are unable to put
you forward for any of our vacancies..." This
is not only disappointing, but
also a huge waste of your precious
time.
So how do you secure a junior position?
You do this by actively selling
yourself directly to the actuarial
employers. This will entail researching
the market for suitable employers
in your chosen work location, producing
a killer CV and an irresistible
application letter, and preparing
yourself fully for the interviews
you begin to schedule. Easier said
than done, you ask? Not at all,
read on and find out how!
