Planning your career
It is important to remember
that the job moves you make now are going to have a significant
impact on your long-term career as an actuary.
There are a few things to think about before heading
for greener pastures. If you have been in your current
job for less than two years, or have had a number of
job changes in the last few years, then give a lot of
thought to your motivation for leaving. If you see a
pattern starting to emerge, with you leaving your job
every two to three years, you can be sure potential employers
will also see this pattern and have concerns that you
will start to get itchy feet after a couple of years
in their job too. Stability is an important factor to
employers and is likely to remain so in the foreseeable
future. Job-hopping is going to make it more difficult
for you to secure the job you really want further down
the road.
Think hard about what is motivating you to leave your
current job. Can you change any of the factors you list?
Is there opportunity for an international move with your
current employer? Is there a chance to increase your
responsibilities or move to a different department? Speak
to your direct line manager about any of the factors
he or she may help you to fix. Don’t leave your
job on a whim – make sure it’s the right
thing to do, not only in the short term, but also in
respect of your marketability in the longer term.
So, you have decided that the time is ripe for changing
jobs. You are now an active job seeker – actively
looking for a new job and ready to consider suitable
opportunities, authorise applications and open discussions
with potential employers. Have a browse through our vacancies
and send through your CV and we can have a chat about
your requirements and specific opportunities that may
be of interest.
If you aren’t unhappy in your current role, but
you would certainly like to keep an eye on the opportunities
out there, you are more in the speculative job
seeker category. We are quite happy to discuss opportunities
even if you are only likely to be interested in the occasional
opportunity we put your way. We can also chat to you
about the actuarial job markets that interest you and
also whether there are any specific companies that may
be of interest. We can keep you informed about any suitable
opportunities that arise, either individually or through
our job alerts system, until that perfect role does come
along where you would like to take some action.
So you decide that you
are definitely not looking
for a job. You may be
very happy with your current company and the potential
it
has to offer you at
the moment. However,
planning your career means it is important to ensure
you are gaining
the right experience
now to facilitate a
move in future. We are even happy to chat to you at
this stage, advising
you on skills in demand
in your chosen location
and how you can improve your marketability between
now and the
time you do want to
move. We won’t pressure you
to send your CV anywhere – we want to make sure
that you are ready to move before we work on securing
you a new appointment. You may like to keep in touch
with the actuarial job markets by signing up for
our newsletter or browsing through the news and views section
of our website.
So, do give us a call,
whatever category you
fall in – while it is never
beneficial to send out applications to companies too
far in advance of your planned move, it is never too
early to start thinking about the options open to you.
Our winning formula of offering candidates and clients a quality
service has led to our rapid expansion. We presently have several
offices strategically positioned throughout the world, where we combine

with the benefits of extensive resources. We are committed to providing
